A friend of mine asked for some ideas for an alternate harmonization for this hymn to be sung in their stake conference. I wrote it for organ, but it can easily be adapted for use on the piano by leaving notes out or bringing the bottom note up an octave. Playing this alternate harmonization all the way through before the congregation begins singing also makes an excellent introduction.

After the passing of President Monson. My bishop had called and requested We Thank Thee O God For A Prophet to be the closing song on that up and coming Sunday. With the feelings and emotions of losing such a great leader. I did not want to just play it straight from the hymn book. In the passed I took a few cords from Clay Christensen’s version that he used during general conference that I would use on the last verse, but I still wanted more. After finding Chad’s arrangement. I knew it was what I was looking for. Playing the first verse straight from the book, the second verse with Clay’s style plus a walking bass line in the pedal. And finally Chad’s arrangement. The feeling that the last verse brought into the chapel was amazing. Out of the 17 years that ive been an organist. This was the only time that the congregation stood up during the last verse of the hymn, because of the spirit that was with us.
