A free harmonization of the hymn most commonly-sung hymn on Palm Sunday.
Description
This is the hymn most commonly-sung on Palm Sunday (the Sunday before Easter, which is the beginning of Holy Week in the Liturgical Year), and commemorates the triumphal entry of Jesus Christ into Jerusalem when he was greeted by the waving of palm fronds. It is often used as a stately processional, as clergy and choir march into the church or cathedral at the beginning of the worship service. As such, you should be mindful not to play it too fast.
Though members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints are becoming slowly, increasingly aware of the Liturgical Calendar, Easter has not historically been recognized as a season (like the Christmas Season), and thus Lent, Palm Sunday, and Holy Week have not been regarded as important events leading up to Easter. As such, this hymn was categorized under “Praise” and “Worship” in the 1985 LDS Hymnal. I hope increasing awareness will lead more members of our faith to embrace this wonderful music.
